Take part in Save the Children’s race against hunger

At our  Crafty Pint at the Railway Pub on 12th June, we are very proud to be hosting an evening with Save the Children and the Craftivist Collective’s I’m a Piece project.  This special evening will take place during the run up to the UK  hosting the 2013 G8 summit in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland on 17 – 18 June 2013.  World leaders could provide the necessary funding to transform the lives of millions of children affected by malnutrition.  Despite enormous progress in other areas – such as a halving in the number of child deaths over the last two decades – malnutrition still affects millions of children around the world.  Save the Children have been campaigning to raise awareness of the impact of child hunger.  Chronically malnourished children are on average nearly 20% less literate than those who have a nutritious diet.  Not having a nutritious diet can severely impair a child’s ability to read and write a simple sentence and answer basic maths questions correctly – regardless of the amount and quality of schooling they have received.  Save the Children Chief Executive Justin Forsyth explains: “… poor nutrition is capable of seriously damaging a child’s life chances before he or she even sets foot in a classroom.”

One campaign to raise awareness of child hunger has been I’m a Piece.  Over 700 people have hand stitched jigsaw pieces with messages to MPs asking them to work towards reducing world hunger. You can read more about I’m a Piece here and here.

I’m a Piece is the result of an amazing collaboration between the Craftivist Collective, Save the Children and the craft community and is touring the UK to support Save the Children’s Race Against Hunger Campaign.  This is what they say about the project..

“Life is like a puzzle, it all seems a mess but when it gets finished it looks brilliant. This project aims to show that we are all connected and our actions make a difference. There is no one solution to the problem of injustice but we can all play a part in a movement for change. We are supporting Save the Children because, as well as being a conscious consumer, this is a vital time to effect long-term change through campaigning and meeting your MP. We can’t miss this opportunity.”

Save The Children/Craftivist Installation evening at The Peoples History Museum Manchester.

Join us on Wednesday 12th June to see this very beautiful and moving collection of hand stitched jigsaw pieces, hear more about the project and craft activism and stitch you own jigsaw piece to add to I’m a Piece.  If you would like to make a jigsaw piece to bring on the night, you can download a template here and follow the instructions here. Otherwise, come along in the evening and we will provide everything you need to make your own jigsaw piece and message.  There is no need to book, but if you would like me to reserve you a table, please email Gillian at Crafty Pint to reserve a table or seat.

Valentine’s workshops with Crafty Pint

Feel the love with our Valentine’s themed workshops this February.  We have a soft spot for Valentine’s at Crafty Pint, but not for candlelit dinners for two!  Instead we like to celebrate our love of making and giving handmade presents to our loved ones, friends and family.  At our Valentine’s workshops you will be able to make Valentine’s themed mosaics or textiles to give, or show yourself some love and treat yourself to something to keep!

This year we have three Valentines workshops to choose from! The return of Concetta’s popular mosaic workshop at our regular Tooting Tram and Social Crafty Pint, and new evening workshops at Ben’s Canteen in Battersea/Clapham and the first of our Streatham Crafty Pint’s with Flaming Nora at The Railway.  At our evening workshops we will bring our amazing collection of vintage Valentines cards to inspire you along with our Valentine’s themed fabrics.  We will show you some easy but effective embroidery and applique techniques so you can sew your own love tokens and decorate them with beads, sequins and buttons. STOP PRESS!!  SATURDAY’S MOSAIC WORKSHOP IS NOW FULLY BOOKED! But don’t worry, we still have places at our evening workshops!

Choose from mosaics or textiles, afternoon or evening and take your pick from Tooting, Battersea or Clapham.  Please email Gillian at Crafty Pint to reserve a place.  You are welcome to drop-in on the day, but please check our website for availability.  We can usually fit people in on the day/evening, but workshops sometimes sell out. These three-hour workshops cost £20 and include tutors and all materials and tools (and cakes at the Tooting ones!).  All our workshops are at informal sociable venues where you can also enjoy food, drink and music.  Details of each venue and times are listed below.
